"Weather means more when you have a garden. There's nothing like listening to a rain shower and thinking how it is soaking in around your green beans" .
Ahh...my two passions; Gardening and Photography! I am so blessed to be able to capture some of my everyday life, as well as create memories for my clients. As we all know...photography is my passion! I take pictures EVERY SINGLE DAY....and yes some of those pictures may be with my iPhone but I am still capturing things that mean a lot to me. With that being said, gardening with my husband Matt is one of my favorite things.
We had a large herb garden that houses about 25+ types of herbs and an ever expanding veggie/fruit garden. This is year three for the Mayernik's garden, and each year, it gets better and better. I love to document the garden from June-September to keep a nice running photo log of how things look at the end of each month. We've added two apple tree's to our garden this year....but I think only one of them made it through the harsh winter! Hopefully in just a few short years, we'll be harvesting Pink Lady Apples!
We planted in May since we had a winter that just never wanted to end. But May and June gave us some of the best gardening weather. The nights were cool and the days were warm with not too much rain. It's been perfect so far. We've harvested about 5.11 lbs so far...mostly peas, beets, turnips, radishes and pickles. Last year we came in with over 200 lbs of fresh fruits/veggies! AMAZING! We hope to surpass that this year!
Food is such an important part of Matt and I's lives. We lead a very healthy lifestyle and having a garden this large just adds to the amazing produce we consume. We really could not ask for anything more local/organic/seasonal. We literally pick our dinners some nights; bring them over to our new outdoor sink, get the dirt off them and throw them right on the grill. About 20 feet from the ground to our dinner plates! We also LOVE sharing with neighbors, friends, and families because come August when we are picking 10+ pounds of tomatoes a week it could get crazy. We do can/jar a lot of our harvest so we have it for the winter months but sharing is just so much fun. People love a sun warmed, fresh picked tomato!
I will be posting another blog at the end of July where you'll see a lot more veggies and a ton more growth on the plants. Right now, everything is just so mini and green. I love seeing the transformation from a little yellow flower, to the start of the fruit which is just tiny, to a nice full grown veggie/fruit! I hope to also incorporate the veggies we pick into some amazing recipes which I'll be sharing with you.
As you can see, I am also very passionate about the food we eat. Food photography is a genre I will never get bored with. It's always changing and evolving, and it keeps me snapping pictures day in and day out.
I hope you all enjoyed a virtual tour of the Mayernik's garden. Be sure to check back at the end of July to see how much we've picked and what we have growing! Let's hope we have some good ol' Jersey Tomatoes by than! Until then, please choose local, seasonal produce when possible. It will be the best tasting, most nutritious thing you can eat!
